I was invited back to the restaurant for a free meal after complaining about the below experience and am pleased to say it was much improved.
All food was fresh and fairly authentic.
In the winter, there is also the option to sit outside on the terrace overlooking the pool which is quite pretty.
Service was very good.

After reading some decent reviews, I was excited to dine here last Thursday night. Unfortunately, we were extremely disappointed. My partner ordered the seafood salad to start;, he was convinced the seafood was tinned. I ordered the Shrimp Caesar Salad; this contained huge lumps of stalks. There was obviously no care taken with the preparation and taste was lacking. Main courses were equally as bad. A mushroom risotto, bland as could be, and a beef lasagne, which was inferior to a ready made supermarket meal. Service was good, restaurant decor a little quirky but ok. Food totally substandard, expecially for the price

Well, the hotel is now the Grand Habtoor. It's part of the Metropolitan chain of hotels.
The decore is not as elegant as other restaurants. It attempts to bring the atmosphere of Italy with chianti bottles hanging from wooden beams over a stucco walled interior. Get past that because the food is like home cooking. I had the mussels starter. The chef used just the right amount of garlic, the pasta was cooked just right and the mussels were tender and tasty. I had the veal scalopini for main and asked them to add some capers to the lemon butter sauce. I found it almost as good as home cooking. I was tempted to get the ossobuco to see their interpretation of it but I will save that for another visit. I was so impressed I asked where the chef had trained. It turns out he was from Sri Lanka and had been cooking Italian in Dubai for over 10 years. Bottom line, not fancy but good solid cooking.
