I took some visiting work colleagues to Indego. They thought they were being taken to a curry house, when I mentioned we were having Indian. They were mightily impressed. The food was lovely and flavoursome, and the staff were very helpful in "decoding" the menu for some of my colleagues. My only complaint is, as with most hotels, the wine list is severely overpriced. Apart from that, we had a lovely evening at Indego.

Yes, it's expensive (expect Dhs. 400-450 per head), and maybe a little over the top for some tastes in its decor and aspirations, but there's no question in my book that this is a gem of a restaurant. I had the most wonderful meal and experienced very attentive service. Although not on the menu, ask for an assortment of starters (you'll get 3 or 4 tasters) rather than picking one - the mint chicken is terrific and the marinated smoked salmon is outstanding. I would also recommend the lamb shank rogan josh - you get to choose how spicy you want it. The wine prices are just silly (as they are in all the other restaurants in the hotel as well) even though the quality is good. Pity there are no half bottles available and wine by the glass is very limited (and not cheap). Still, I really liked the whole atmosphere and will definitely go again should I return to Dubai.

Like the rest of Grosvenor House Dubai, Indego's design is understated luxury. That however is where the luxury ends. I have eaten there twice, the second time out of politeness. The food is barely mediocre and the service is pretentious. The dishes were uninspired, poorly executed, and without distinguishable flavors. The fare was neither classical regional Indian nor modern fusion. The bill added insult to injury. I am happy to pay a king's ransom for a meal fit for a king, but I get seriously pissed off when I pay one for food that would put a street vendor in Mumbai or London out of business.
If you are in the mood for Nouveaux Indian at a luxury Beach Road hotel try Nina's at the Mirage's Arabian Court. The atmosphere is cool, the food is thoughtful and well executed, the service professional and relaxed, and unlike Indego you get what you pay for.
