Despite being given a menu with a full range of a la carte options, we were told once we had made our selection that everyone had to order a full afternoon tea (at 250AED each). Given that one person at the tea was allergic to dairy and could not eat any of the pastries and most of the sandwiches, and another was vegetarian we tried to protest but to no avail. When we specified not to put any dairy in one portion of sandwiches, they took it upon themselves to ensure all of our orders followed suit and substituted all the butter with cream cheese. We left, with much of the food untouched.

The waiter also took it upon herself to tell us that if we were unhappy, we could NOT leave as there is a 24 hour cancellation policy!

If ordering a full afternoon tea is the only option then perhaps they should specify it at the time of booking and not hand out long menus with a la carte options after seating guests? I understand that people might book and then just get there and order a diet coke or a coffee but then maybe institute a minimum spend rather than force people to eat what they don't want to/can't.

We booked to have afternoon tea at the Burj Al Arab on a recent trip to Dubai. It was a huge disappointment. The standard of service was truly poor. There seemed to be one waiter running around serving everybody while two room supervisors were busy either chatting to each other or simply trying to look very important. Neither of them approached our table to ask if we are happy. The food was passable, not foul but neither exciting nor imaginative. We booked the "Indulgent Tea" which included a glass of champagne and a bowl of berries. We were left to pour the champagne ourselves - it was left in an ice bucket on our table, with no cloth, so we had to use our napkins to stop the bottle dripping water all over the table. We waited for almost half an hour after the champagne and berries were served for our glasses and bowls were removed and the tea served.

At the end of tea we were left waiting for almost 40 minutes before the bill was brought.

The tea cost DH600 (£100), not a negligable sum, and we certainly did not get value for money.

We did complain to a manager, who was very charming and went some way to making up for the dreadfully disappointing experience, but we would certainly never book tea there again.
